The Genesis of Research and Development Cell (RDC) and Research Advisory Council (RAC)

The University has both the Centre for Academic Research and Centre for Sponsored Research and Publications each headed by separate Deans. Now in a letter by UGC dated 08-06-2022, it was advised that any research governing body existing or established in the University should be renamed as Research and Development Cell (RDC) as per UGC Guidelines. The Guidelines for Establishment of Research & Development Cell in Higher Education Institutions 2022 suggest that each Institution shall establish a Research and Development Council with defined objectives. The Research Governance will have a Research Advisory Council (RAC) headed by the Vice-Chancellor/Principal or his/her nominee as the apex body of RDC. The Director, nominated by the Vice-Chancellor among the distinguished researchers from the university, will head various committees to drive the governance. RDC may form multiple committees to smoothen its functioning with respective committee members nominated by the Director– RDC and approved by RAC. Hence, it is clear that a Research Advisory Council shall be established with nominated members under the chairmanship of the Vice Chancellor and Director RDC as Convener to govern the activities of RDC and its other committees.

In this context, the Academic Council of the University, in its meeting held on 24-08-2022 has approved the proposal of merging existing Centre for Research and Centre for Sponsored Research into a holistic Research and Development Cell (RDC). Dr D Velmurugan, Dean Sponsored Research and Publications has been nominated as Director for the Research and Development Cell. The Board of Research of the University shall be renamed as Research Advisory Council and the same shall be reconstituted with the members nominated by the Vice Chancellor.
