The aim of the Post Graduate Programme in Biotechnology is to provide internationally recognized high quality teaching, research and training in Biotechnology. Since the Biotechnology is dealing with various branches of sciences like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Statistics, the curriculum and syllabus are framed to meet the requirements of students in their skill development in various fields and employability. Depending upon its tools and techniques, it covers the study of the genetics, chemical and physical attributes of tissues, cells, and organisms to produce new technologies and processes, drug development. Biotechnology graduates are always a prime focus for health care, agriculture, animal husbandry, aquaculture and fisheries, food, industrial, environmental and other related sectors. Biotechnology students can become a research scientist, biotech analysts, agriculture, and other industrial sectors. According to one’s skills and qualifications, the candidate can be qualified for higher education and have a job opportunities from Government R & D Institutes, Private Biomedical, Bio Pharma, Process Development related industries; Agriculture and Aqua Farm Industries. To create higher education / employability in inter and intra-disciplinary teaching, training and research in the areas of modern biotechnology, the M.Sc., in Biotechnology Programme offers from the Department of Marine Biotechnology, Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) Deemed to be University, Chennai – 603 112, Tamil Nadu from the Academic Year 2023-24.

Duration: 2 Years (Four Semester)

Eligibility: B.Sc. degree (55% marks) in any subject of Life Sciences / Agriculture / Medicine / B.V.Sc. / B.E. / B.Tech. of recognized Indian or foreign Universities.

Intake: 16 per year

Mode of Selection: Based on merit / marks obtained in the Qualifying Examination.

Project and Internship

  1. Individual project work will be assigned in different fields of biotechnology especially marine sciences.
  2. Internship / summer training from Biopharma/ Biomedical industries, Government R & D Institutes, Reputed Biotechnology Research Institutes / Universities during the First Semester summer holidays for a period of 30 days. An extra 3 credits will be given to students.

  5. Regular visit to R & D Institutes like CIBA, NIOT, CMFRI, NIO, ZSI, NBFGR, RGCA etc and related Industries like Biopharma Companies, Aqua Industries (Feed Industries & Hatchery).
  6. As specialization in marine science department, train the students in underwater exploration skills such as SCUBA Diving, Snorkelling techniques, and underwater collection, be helpful to get higher education and employments in India and abroad.

Programme Specific Objectives

PSO 1: Understand the fundamental concepts of cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology and other allied fields.
PSO 2: Analyse and able to design, conduct experiments and interpret data for investigating problems in modern bioengineering subjects.
PSO 3: Perform procedures as per laboratory standards in the areas of basic and modern biotechnology .
PSO 4: Understand the potential and impact of biotechnological innovations and inventions on the environment, health sector, agriculture, etc.
