The Faculty Development and Instructional Resources Centre (FDIRC) is established to advance professional development, integrate teaching resources and enhance teaching quality at Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET). The centre is also the Administrative hub for the faculty, curriculum design and evaluation. By working closely with Multimedia Centre and Media Educational Resource Centre, the Faculty Development and Instructional Resource Centre provide frontline teaching assistants to all faculty members. FDIRC helps teachers to develop and renovate their teaching and create effective environments, and offers technical support to faculty research and career planning by organizing training programmes and workshops.
Intellectual Capital Enhancement
All the faculty members teaching maritime courses undergo a course on “Training for Trainers and Assessors (TOTA)” prescribed and approved by the Director General of shipping. Other faculty members have undergone Orientation and Refresher courses in the Academic Staff Colleges of the various Universities on teaching methodology, curriculum development, effective evaluation system, making use of technology in preparing teaching materials etc,. The University encourages the faculty members to participate and conduct National/International Conferences/Seminars with full financial assistance. Further the faculty members are encouraged to conduct research related to faculty development, to sharpen faculty skills in media application and computer literacy.
Hardware and Support
To help in the development of web-based material, in the integration of video or graphics into course materials and in the use of various instructional technologies the entire faculty members are provided with a computer, internet connectivity and a scanner/printer. Faculty members are enabled to access scores of e-journal, periodicals and publications through online facility available in library. The Wi-Fi enabled smart class rooms supplement the computer aided teaching.
Teaching and Technology Devlopment
To assist faculty members improve their teaching and to facilitate them to carry out their research & research projects in the past 5 years alone Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) has invested up to Rs.8.5 crores towards the installation of equipments like, Full Mission Ship Simulator, Polymerize Chain Reaction Equipment (PCR), TRIBON Ship design software, PLAXIS Geo Technical software, STADD PRO etc.,
Fostering Research Environment
Faculty members are offered incentives in terms of monitory benefits and academic recognition to promote research publications and Ph.D guidance. Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) provides research grants to an extent of Rs.1.93 crores for purchase of equipment and software’s to perform research projects, training on web site development geared towards research website and to carry out postdoctoral research at foreign university. Through the Industry Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC) Industry experts are invited to communicate the need for research in the respective domains, adjunct professors and visiting faculty are engaged to educate the faculty exclusively about how to Design Doctoral Research Programme and Scientific writing with explanation about SCI (Scientific Citation Index), SCOPUS, etc. to facilitate the faculty to publish research papers and help them progress in their Ph.D. work.
