Diploma in Able Seaman/Bosun To Officer Programme

One Year HNC Nautical Science Program

This Programme is conducted in Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) in collaboration with City of Glasgow College UK.  The Programme is approved by the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) and Maritime Coast Guard Agency (MCGA), UK


Aim

It has been found that there are number of eligible Able Bodied Seaman (Abs) and Bosun’s who are brilliant enough to become Merchant Navy Officer, but had been deprived of chance to become one due their educational background.

We at Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) in collaboration with City of Glasgow College provide a one year Programme to such eligible seamen to become an Officer in the Merchant Navy.

 

Programme Duration

The Duration of the Programme is One Year out of which first six months training is in Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and the second six months training at City of Glasgow College UK.

Eligibility

  1. Academic Qualification:  SCQF Level 5 (10th Standard) and above with English, Mathematics and any of the Science subjects. Or equivalent overseas qualification.
  2. At least 36 months of qualifying sea service in an acceptable deck capacity and 6 months of bridge watch duties in the last 12 months of sea service.
  3. Testimonials to cover the Character, Behaviour, Conduct and Ability of the Candidate onboard ship.
  4. Discharge Book entries to verify the sea service.  A candidate does not have discharge book  will need to obtain documentation from the shipping company verifying their sea service.
  5. IELTS not mandatory but an added advantage for further studies if the students wish.  IELTS score should be not less than 5.5 in each part with overall band score not less than 5.5.

Programme Pattern

  1. First session of the Programme will be conducted at Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET).  The students are to pass all the learning out comes conducted by Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and the Graded Unit examination conducted by the City of Glasgow College.  Trainees who have completed the foundation program and passed the foundation examination and the HNC unit examination delivered at Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) will be deemed to have me the academic requirements for progression to part 2 in City of Glasgow College subject to meeting UKVI requirements.

Short Programmes During 1st Session of Training

  1. The trainees should undergo the following short Programmes at Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET):

    1. GMDSS (UK)
    2. CPSCPRB
    3. Medical First Aid
    4. Fire Fighting

Short Programmes During the 2nd Session of Training

  1. EDH
  2. HELM – Operational Level
  3. NAEST – Operational Level

Certificate of Competency

  1. On successful completion of both the session Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and City of Glasgow College, Students will be allowed for SQA external written Examination and MCA Oral Examination.

Further Career Progression

  1. After completion of 18 months sea service, the students will undergo further training at COGC for the following Programmes/examinations.

    1. HND
    2. SQA Written Examinations
    3. MCA Oral Preparation/Examination
    4. NAEST – Management level Programme
    5. HELM – Management level Programme
    6. Medical Care Programme

    After successful completion of the above mentioned Programme/examinations, the students will be awarded with Certificate of Competency as Chief Mate Unlimited.
    After obtaining certificate of competency as Chief Mate unlimited, the students should undergo further 18 months training at City of Glasgow college for Master’s certificate of Competency Preparation Programme (Orals Only).  On successful completion the students will be awarded with Certificate of Competency as Master Unlimited.
